Play: A1 is making a throw-in along the sideline in Team A's back court. A1's T-I is muffed by A2 who is in Team A's front court and the ball bounces into Team A's back court where it is recovered by A3. What is the correct ruling?
a) Back court violation on Team A because Team A had control while making the T-I
b) Back court violation on Team A because A2 in the front court and A3 as the first to touch the ball in the back court.
c) Legal pay because Team A did not have control during the T-I.
d) Legal play since Team A did not gain team control in the front court.
What are the correct answer(s)?
POTW 12-22-08
Correct answers were: D & E
Why are D & E correct?
First if this happens it is a product of poor officiating. We should never put the ball in play when the players are lined up incorrectly. We need to pay attention and align players properly. Good preventative officiating is essential. If in this situation we need to look at Rule 9 Section 1 and Rule 8 Section 1 Art. 4. Looking at 9-1-2 and the penalty section if the violation is by the FTer's opponent only which is true in this case and the try is successful the goal counts and the violation is ignored. The case book has a similar play on page 66 9.1.2 Situation B. This play all depends on when you recognize the violation. It is important that we prevent things of this nature if possible.
Play: A1 is shooting 2 foul shots. The officials fail to recognized prior to the 1st FT that Team A is in the first two lane spaces and Team B is in the second two lane spaces. After the 1st FT is successful, the official notices the error. How is this situation handled?
a) Call a T on Team B for not being in
the 1st Lane Spaces
b) Cancel the FT, reset the players and
re-shoot the 1st FT.
c) Call a simultaneous violation on Team
A & B and cancel the point
d) Count the point for Team A
e) Ignore the improper alignment and
properly align players for the 2nd FT.
