POTW 1-9-09
Play: A1 is intentionally fouled during a successful 3 pt attempt by B2. What is your ruling?
a) Count the 3 pt basket
b) Award A1 one free throw
c) Award A1 two free throws
d) Team A receives a throw-in at the spot nearest the foul after the final FT
e) Team B receives a throw-in after the final FT is successful
f) If the final FT is unsuccessful the ball remains alive as after any other missed final FT attempt.
What are the correct answer(s)?
POTW 1-2-09 Correct answers were: C & D
Why are C & D correct?
This play is quite difficult to call based upon whom you talk to. I have seen several rulings that say this is a violation since A was the last to touch in the FC and first to touch in the BC. So let's look at Rule 4. When does the T-I end? It ends when it is legally touched. So the T-I ends when A2 muffed the ball. Next question is when is Team control established? We all know there is no Team control during a T-I. So if Team A never had Team control during the T-I then how is the muff by A2 create a violation? It does not. With all this information we then realize the only correct answers can be C & D.
Play: A1 is making a throw-in along the sideline in Team A's back court. A1's T-I is muffed by A2 who is in Team A's front court and the ball bounces into Team A's back court where it is recovered by A3. What is the correct ruling?
a) Back court violation on Team A because Team A had control while making the T-I
b) Back court violation on Team A because A2 in the front court and A3 as the first to touch the ball in the backcourt.
c) Legal pay because Team A did not have control during the T-I.
d) Legal play since Team A did not gain team control in the front court.
