Rule 5 Section 12 Article 4 states a timeout shall not be granted until after the ball becomes live to start the game. It further states the additional timeout provided for each extra period shall not be granted until after the ball has become live to start the extra period.
So does this mean if a team has 1 T.O. left at the end of regulation and then acquires an additional one for the OT that they may call the one left over T.O. from regulation before the ball becomes live? NO!!!
The next question whihc needs answered is when does the ball become live to start the extra period? Per Rule 6 Section 1 Article 2, the ball will become live when the ball leaves the tossed ball leaves the official's hand.
Based upon all the information, the only correct answer can be C.
Play: Team A has no timeouts remaining at the end of regulation with the score tied. Both teams will be granted an extra timeout for the overtime period. When can Team A be allowed to use that timeout?
a) At the conclusion of regulation
b) Prior to the beginning of the OT period
c) After the ball becomes alive for the OT period
d) After the clock has properly started for the OT period
